All sterling silver jewelry plated with 18k gold requires special care and is subject to changes in appearance. Gold plating is a thin layer over sterling silver, and contact with various surfaces, exposure to chemical elements found in lotions and perfumes, and even the skin’s natural pH can act as a polish or react with this delicate layer — gradually wearing it away and revealing the sterling silver underneath. Once the gold plating wears off, it is possible to replate the piece or have it cleaned for continued use as sterling silver.
